Be careful going to USA - health care costs
Be very careful if you are thinking of holidaying in the USA. Even for a short tip, health care can be extremely expensive and the travel insurance will often be voided, due to techinicallities.

Unfortunately, that can be very true. I worked with someone who was in the US to work for a week, and she had to go to a hospital for a very routine test.
She said that the cost to her for the test was almost what she had earned for the week's work.

Just make sure you get travel insurance. As long as you didn't do anything stupid like fall off a balcony, they will usually honor it.

Yes, a visit to a doctor can be over $100, plus whatever medication / medical procedures you might need. Buying travel insurance is very important, as well as reading the fine print about what's covered and what is not.

I've heard of that kind of accident being disallowed, based on the assumption that the person was drunk and caused the harm to themselves.

Travel insurance should be the foremost priority for anybody who is aspiring to visit USA. Since health care is very costly in US, one has to take cover for the medical bills. The travel agents charge some fees towards travel insurance which includes medical insurance also. We have to ensure that the clauses in travel insurance document properly cover medical bills. Some documents are inadequate in nature and do not properly cover the provisions for medical costs. In such circumstances the tourist will have to face trouble and end up with huge medical bills. So one has to verify travel insurance documents for complete medical insurance cover before leaving for USA.

In the United States, ownership of the health care system is mainly in private hands, though federal, state, county, and city governments also own certain facilities.
The non-profit hospitals share of total hospital capacity has remained relatively stable (about 70%) for decades.[28] There are also privately owned for-profit hospitals as well as government hospitals in some locations, mainly owned by county and city governments.
There is no nationwide system of government-owned medical facilities open to the general public but there are local government-owned medical facilities open to the general public. The federal Department of Defense operates field hospitals as well as permanent hospitals (the Military Health System), to provide military-funded care to active military personnel.
The federal Veterans Health Administration operates VA hospitals open only to veterans, though veterans who seek medical care for conditions they did not receive while serving in the military are charged for services. The Indian Health Service operates facilities open only to Native Americans from recognized tribes. These facilities, plus tribal facilities and privately contracted services funded by IHS to increase system capacity and capabilities, provide medical care to tribespeople beyond what can be paid for by any private insurance or other government programs.[29]
Hospitals provide some outpatient care in their emergency rooms and specialty clinics, but primarily exist to provide inpatient care. Hospital emergency departments and urgent care centers are sources of sporadic problem-focused care. "Surgicenters" are examples of specialty clinics. Hospice services for the terminally ill who are expected to live six months or less are most commonly subsidized by charities and government. Prenatal, family planning, and "dysplasia" clinics are government-funded obstetric and gynecologic specialty clinics respectively, and are usually staffed by nurse practitioners.

I agree with you that health is most important when you travel overseas. You should definitely have some type of Visitor Insurance if you are going on a vacation. If you get injured abroad with no type of insurance, they may refuse to treat.
