I've stayed in Puerto Vallarta several times, on the outskirts of town along the resort strip. There are plenty of decent properties within walking distance of the town.

It's a beautiful area with lots of things to do and see. I think that tourism may be down slightly there in the last year or so.

Has anyone been there recently?

I was there last year. It's gorgeous! I stayed at the Riu Jalisco, a 5 star hotel. It was great!

I was there recently and it was great.. I love the mountains in the background, with the ocean... picture perfect.

There are some great neighborhoods just a few blocks from the Malecon.

It's great to see the families out at night, and the great architecture of the houses. It's not decadent or overly expensive, but I think it's an interesting culture, and it's just a little off the main drag of the town.
