Preparing For Your Trip To Haiti
As with any trip you take, preparing in advance is essential and Haiti is no different. There are some things you need to do to help your trip go a bit smoother.
* Book all accommodations and travel arrangements ahead of time. You should also decide how you will be traveling while in Haiti. You can get around Haiti by plane, boat, bus, taxi or car hire. If you are driving yourself, you will need to obtain an international driving permit. It's right side driving there.
* All US, British, Canadian and other EU travelers will be required to have a valid passport with a validity of 6 months from the date you arrive and a return ticket. No visa is required. You can stay up to a maximum of 90 days. If you wish to stay longer, you will have to contact the Haitian Immigration services. Any other travelers that are not mentioned above will need to check Embassy to see if a visa is required.
* The currency of Haiti is the gourde (french) and the goud (kreyol) and it's divided into 100 centimes (french) and santim (kreyol).
* You are required to show proof of Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid vaccinations. You may be required on some occasions to show proof of Malaria and Rabies vaccination. You will also need to show proof of a yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from an infected area.
* Certain diseases and illness are present in Haiti such as Hepatitis B, Dengue fever, seasonal meningococcal meningitis, rabies and HIV/AIDS.
* Do not drink the water from the tap here. If you must use the water for things such as brushing your teeth, ice or others, be sure to boil it first. Boil all milk as well as it is unpasteurised. Avoid dairy products.
* Check with your medical insurance policy to see if you will be covered. You might want to consider purchasing travel insurance as well.
